With rising popularity and adaptability of
smartphones in India, Mozilla has announced partnership with two Indian mobile device
brands Spice and Intex to bring the first Firefox OS devices to India in the
next few months.
Mozilla said, it will launch the first
Firefox OS handsets in India "in the next few months", with the help
of its two Indian mobile device partners.
“Intex is excited to announce its
association with Mozilla which will enable us to develop unparalleled smart
devices on the latest Firefox OS platform,” said Mr. Sanjay Kumar Kalirona,
Business Head, Mobile, Intex Technologies (India) Ltd.
Mr. Dilip Modi, Chairman, S Mobility Ltd., said, “We have been the technology innovators in
India’s telecom industry and are pleased to introduce Firefox OS in India
through our smartphones to cater to the country’s masses."
According to IDC, smartphone sales grew 181
percent year on year in India in 2013. Meanwhile, around 78 percent of the 250
million handsets sold in India last year were still feature phones. So there is
very large potential of selling of ultra-low cost smart phones in the Indian
Market.
Meanwhile it is worth mentioning that, Mozilla
announced a partnership with Chinese chipmaker Spreadtrum this February to
bring smartphones costing under $25 (approx. under Rs. 2000) to markets such as
India.
